Waterford, CT – February 11, 1960

     On the night of February 11, 1960 , four men took off from Washington, D.C. in a twin-engine airplane bound for Connecticut.  While approaching the Waterford area the plane encountered thick low-lying fog conditions.  The pilot circled Waterford Airport several times before attempting a landing.  The plane subsequently crashed into an abandoned water-filled quarry.  One man managed to escape the sinking plane but the other three did not.  Their bodies were later recovered by divers.   

      The location of the quarry was reported to be in “a wooded area a few hundred feet south of Route 85.”
