Orono, Maine – September, 24, 1949

On September 24, 1949, a lone 24-year-old pilot was flying in a single-engine Ercoupe aircraft over the town of Orono when the engine reportedly “conked out”.  The pilot was “buzzing” the home of his sister at the time.  The plane went down in a cluster of alder trees on Stillwater Avenue near the Grant Farm which cushioned the impact enough that the pilot walked away with only minor injuries.  The aircraft, however, was completely wrecked.
