North Andover, Massachusetts – May 10, 1936

     On May 10, 1936, three people at the Lawrence Airport in North Andover paid one dollar each for a ride in an airplane.  The 24-year-old pilot accepted the money, and took off in a monoplane with all three aboard.  After circling the area for awhile the airplane suddenly developed engine trouble and began loosing altitude.  The pilot aimed for an open pasture, but the aircraft glanced off the tops of some tall pine trees lining the edge of the field, and the plane crashed to the ground.  

     All aboard were shaken, but not injured.  The pilot and two of the passengers were identified in the newspaper however, the third passenger was an unidentified boy, who according the press, “scampered away as soon as the plane hit the ground”.
