At 9:30 a.m. on December 15, 1963, a twin-engine navy S-2 Tracker aircraft with two men aboard took off from the South Weymouth Naval Air station for a routine training flight. At about 10:40 a.m. the pilot radioed that the aircraft was loosing power. As he attempted to return to the navy station the plane crashed in a marshy wooded area of Hingham killing both men aboard.
The crew were identifies as:
Lieutenant Commander Thomas Sanderson, 28, of New haven, Connecticut.
Commander Peter Gray, 43, of West Acton, Massachusetts.
Both men were naval reservists
A third man had been scheduled to be aboard to accumulate flight hours, but was kept on the ground because the flight was to be a test run and as such passengers were not allowed according to regulations.
