Hardwick, Massachusetts – March 17, 1980
At 12:15 p.m. on March 17, 1980, a lone pilot left Brainard Airport in Hartford, Connecticut, for a pleasure flight over Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. While returning to Hartford, his single-engine Cessna developed engine trouble and crashed in a thickly wooded area of Hardwick. The pilot was able to extricate himself and walked through the woods until he came to a house and asked to use the phone.
