On November 12, 1977, two New Hampshire men were flying in a vintage 1938 Porterfield airplane when it developed engine trouble in the area of Fort Devens. The pilot requested permission to land at the army base and it was granted. After making repairs, the pilot attempted to resume his flight, but the plane crashed on takeoff at the end of the runway and both men were killed.
