Atlantic Ocean – December 13, 1963
At 9:45 a.m. a flight of two Air Force F-101 fighter jets took off from the Suffolk County Air Force Base on Long Island, New York, for an intercept-training mission over the ocean. About fifteen minutes later one of the aircraft, (Ser. No. 56-0327), developed a mechanical problem and the crew ejected, and the jet crashed into the ocean south of Nantucket Island.
According to the pilot of the second jet, both crewmen parachuted safely, but neither was wearing cold-water survival suits. The crewmen perished before rescue boats could reach them.
The crewmen were identified as:
