Narragansett Bay – April 8, 1951
On the afternoon of April 8, 1951, an instructor and student pilot took off in a small airplane from Hillsgrove Airport in Warwick. While fling over the Bristol, R. I., area the engine lost power, and the pilot attempted an emergency landing in an open field near Narragansett Bay. As the plane was making its approach, strong winds forced it out over the water where it crashed just off shore. The occupants escaped and swam to shore. The plane was later pulled from the water with a cable.
