Blackstone, Massachusetts – September 19, 1940

On the evening of September 19, 1940, a lone pilot took off from an airfield in Mendon, Massachusetts, in a two-seat Taylor Cub.  About ten minutes into his flight the engine began to sputter and skip, and the pilot looked for a place to make an emergency landing.  Spotting an open farm field on Elm Street he aimed for it.  The pilot made a perfect landing, but as the plane was slowing to a stop in went into an open ditch and upended causing considerable damage to the fuselage.  The pilot was not injured.
