Ayer, Massachusetts – February 5, 1960
At 9 a.m. on the morning of February 5, 1960, two college students belonging to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Flight Club, took off from Bedford, Massachusetts, in a single-engine aircraft for a “practice simulated emergency flight”. About a half hour into the flight the plane developed engine trouble and crashed in a wooded area of Ayer. Both students walked away with minor injuries and were treated at Ayer Community Hospital.
