The Atlantic Airport opened on May 30, 1928. It was the first airport in Rhode Island that could accommodate both land and seaplanes. It began with the purchase of 70 acres from Mrs. Eleanor D. Baker of Charlestown. The field was initially 3,400 feet long by 650 ft. wide, with a hangar added later.
During World War II it served as an auxiliary naval air base for the U. S. Navy. President George Bush trained there.
