Atlantic Ocean – August 18, 1987
On August 18, 1987, a lone pilot aboard a Bellanca Scout, (N5060K), was “fish spotting” for a group of fishing vessels about 25 miles off the southern coast of Martha’s Vineyard. At one point the aircraft dove towards a school of tuna and when the aircraft began to pull upwards a loud “crack” was heard by a nearby boat crew. They then witnessed the left wing fold backwards before the plane went into a spin and dove into the sea. The aircraft and the pilot were not recovered.
