Smithfield, Rhode Island – March 27, 1938
On Shortly before 5 p.m. on March 27, 1938, a four-seat Waco cabin plane with four men aboard was attempting to take off from the Smithfield Airport. The plane had gained an altitude of only ten feet when the pilot decided to abort the takeoff. As the plane came down it was caught in a sudden gust of wind and driven into a stone wall and flipped over. The plane was severely damaged but nobody aboard was injured.
The three passengers had paid one dollar each for a scenic flight over the area.
