Smithfield, Rhode Island – July 24, 1946

     On July 24, 1946, a 36-year-old student pilot from Cranston was attempting to land a Fairchild low-wing monoplane at the Smithfield Airport when the motor failed and he crash-landed into an apple orchard adjacent to the landing field.  Damage to the plane was not serious and the pilot suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
