Franklin Airport was established in 1929.  In fact, according to a Woonsocket Call and Evening Reporter newspaper article dated September 6, 1929, it was one of two airfields under construction at the time in the town of Franklin.  The other was  Woolford’s Field.  For more information about Woolford’s Field, click here.

The Franklin Airport was located on King Street operated by Austin E. Sherbert of Franklin.   When completed, the airport was scheduled to have two runways, each over 2,000 feet long.  The airport was set to receive four aircraft on September 7th, but due to weather and construction delays the date was pushed back to the 14th.  Commercial flying was scheduled to begin at that time.

The airport featured a flight training school for those wishing to learn to fly.

The field was set to be a regulation airport modeled after the East Boston Airport, and to meet those regulations field lighting and other equipment was planned for installation as well as the construction of a large hangar.

It’s unknown when the Franklin Airport ceased operations.
