Atlantic Ocean – June 5, 1956

     On the night of June 5, 1956, aircraft from Anti-Submarine Squadron 39 based at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, were taking part in training exercises with the aircraft carrier Antietam off the coast of Rhode Island.   The squadron consisted of S2F Sentinel Tracker aircraft that were making practice take-offs and landings on the ship.  During the exercises, one aircraft with four men aboard crashed into the sea and sank, with no survivors. 

     The crew were identified as :

     Pilot: Commander C. H. Liebauser of East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
