Quonset Point, Rhode Island – February 9, 1967
On February 9, 1967, what was described in the press as a “twin-engine propeller-driven Navy plane” took off from the Quonset Point Naval Air Station for a routine training flight. When the plane returned, it was discovered that the plane’s left landing gear would not lock down. The pilot was put into a holding pattern while fire crews sprayed a layer of foam on the runway. The plane made a belly landing and skidded for 2,500 feet before coming to rest. There was damage to the plane’s underbelly, but no one aboard the plane was injured.
