Vassalboro, Maine – March, 1948
In early March of 1948, (exact date unknown), a small plane carrying a pilot and two Maine politicians, Robert A. Taft and Senator Owen Brewster, was traveling from Augusta to Bangor when it developed engine trouble. The pilot made an emergency crash-landing on the ice covering the Kennebec River in Vassalboro. The plane was slightly damaged, but none of the men aboard were injured. The three made their way across the ice to the snow covered shore.
The type of aircraft is unknown.
