Skowhegan, Maine – July 18, 1948
On July 18, 1948, a small aircraft with a 27-year-old pilot and a 16-year-old passenger took off from the Newport Airport in Newport, Maine, bound for Skowhegan which is about 35 miles away. The pilot was a WWII navy veteran who’d learned to fly under the G.I. Bill and was in the process of obtaining his commercial pilot’s license. While in route the plane crashed in a rugged wooded area and both aboard were killed.
When the plane didn’t arrive on time a search was instituted which involved fifteen aircraft. The wreckage was found about 1.5 miles east of Skowhegan. The cause of the crash is unknown.
The type of aircraft was not stated.
