Rehoboth, Massachusetts – May 30, 1954
On the afternoon of May 30, 1954, a father and his 11-year-old son were flying in a Piper Cub aircraft over the Rehoboth area. At one point the father attempted to land at a private airstrip at “Schobel’s pasture”. He aborted the first attempt, and was seen to circle the field and attempt another try. According to a witness, as the aircraft was approaching, the engine suddenly stopped, and the plane appeared to hit an “air pocket”, after which it crashed in a swampy wooded area about 400 feet off Route 44 near Circuit Drive.
Both occupants were transported to a hospital in Taunton where the father succumbed to his injuries.
