Quonset Point Naval Air Station – August 15, 1943
At 10:55 a.m. on the morning of August 15, 1943, an TBF Avenger, (Bu. No. 24273), with a crew of three aboard, had just taken off from the Quonset Point Naval Air Station when a fire, caused by a ruptured oil line, suddenly erupted in the engine. The pilot declared and emergency and made an emergency landing on runway 19. The crew evacuated safely and the fire was extinguished.
