Pittsburg, New Hampshire – November 7, 1955
On November 7, 1955, two New Hampshire Fish & Game wardens were flying in a Cessna 140 on a “fish planting” mission when the plane crashed in a remote wooded area. A search and rescue operation was initialized which included aircraft from Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts, as well as New Hampshire Civil Air Patrol aircraft. The wreckage of the downed plane was spotted from the air, and both wardens were rescued by helicopter. Both men had received injuries from the crash.
As a side note, searchers also spotted a signal fire from the air. Upon investigation, it was found to have been set by a lost hunter who’d been missing for two days. He too was rescued.
