Off Charlestown, Rhode Island, – May 3, 1944
On May 3, 1944, an ensign was making practice landings at the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Air Field in an F6F-3n Hellcat, (Bu. No. 40909), when he crashed into the water 300 yards off shore. The plane was lost, but the pilot was uninjured.
