Narragansett Bay, R. I. – June 13, 1954
On the night of June 13, 1954, Ensign Henry John Schilling, (26), took off from the Cherry Point Air Station in North Carolina in an F2H Banshee fighter jet, (Bu. No. 126405). His destination was the Quonset Point, Naval Air Station in Rhode Island. As he approached Quonset Point, he was killed when his aircraft suddenly crashed into the waters of Narragansett Bay about 2.5 miles short of the runway.
Ensign Schilling was assigned to VF-71.
