Nantucket Sound – November 10, 1949

On November 10, 1949, a navy AD-2 Skyraider, (Bu. No. 122299), was participating in a dive bombing training exercise over Nantucket Sound. At one point, after successfully coming out of a steep dive, the cockpit began to fill with smoke. After declaring an emergency, the pilot was able to make it to the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Air Field in Rhode Island where he made a successful forced landing.
The aircraft was assigned to VA-94 at Charlestown, R. I.
