Mount Monadnock, New Hampshire – July 9, 1972
On the afternoon of July 9, 1972, two young men took off in a small airplane from Jaffrey, New Hampshire, for what was to be a sightseeing flight. Shortly after taking off, the plane crashed into the slope of Mt. Monadnock injuring both men. The crash was witnessed by a troop of Cub Scouts who were camping about a quarter of a mile away near the summit. While some scouts reported the crash at a ranger station, others responded to the scene and administered first aid to the victims. The injured men were evacuated by helicopter about four and a half hours later and flown to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N. H.
Members of the Pisgah Search & Rescue Team also responded to the scene.
