Heron Lake, Maine – October 19, 1963

On October 19, 1963, two men were aboard a J-3 Piper Cub aircraft flying in the vicinity of Heron Lake, Maine.  Some hunters who had established a camp near the lake saw the aircraft circle above them traveling slowly at a low altitude.  Then the motor abruptly stopped and the plane nose-dived into the woods about 100 yards from the Allagash River.  The hunters made their way to the wreck and discovered that the pilot had been killed instantly, but the passenger was still alive.  He was removed from the wreckage and died an hour later.
