Hamden, CT. – September 24, 1933

Hamden, Connecticut – September 25, 1933

On September 24, 1933, a small plane with a pilot and two 14-year-old passengers took off from the Hamden Airport for a sightseeing flight.  While not far from the airport, the engine suddenly stopped, and the pilot attempted to glide back to the airfield.  Unfortunately the plane lost too much altitude and the pilot was forced to ditch in a swamp.  When the plane hit the water it nosed over and its occupants were thrown out of it.  The trio climbed upon the half-submerged aircraft and awaited rescue by rowboat.  All received minor injuries.

The swamp was reportedly located in the Winchester Repeating Arms powder farm and the plane came to rest within 100 feet of a powder magazine.
