Crawford Notch, N. H. – July 9, 1960

Crawford Notch, New Hampshire – July 9, 1960

On July 9, 1960, a four-seat Cessna airplane was flying over Route 302 in Crawford Notch when it developed engine trouble.   As the pilot tried to gain altitude a wingtip struck a tree and the plane crashed into a rocky gorge at the foot of Cascade Falls.  The crash was witnessed by a road crew working only ten feet away.   Normally the gorge would have been full of water, but the water level was extremely low due to a recent drought.

Four people were aboard the airplane.  There was the female pilot, her husband and son, and a family friend.  The pilot received critical injuries, but the other three received non-life threatening injuries.  All were transported to Morrison Hospital in Whitefield, New Hampshire.
