Conway, Massachusetts – December 8, 1963
On December 8, 1963, two men from Webster, Massachusetts, were flying home from Ohio in a “new, two-seat, acrobatic type aircraft” which one of them had reportedly just purchased. While passing over Massachusetts the plane became lost in thick cloudy weather. The pilot radioed that they could see the Massachusetts Turnpike, and a section west of Springfield was ordered closed so they could make an emergency landing. However, they didn’t land on the Turnpike.
Instead, the manager of Harriman Airport in North Adams took off in a Cessna 310 and intercepted the lost flyers, hoping to guide them to Pittsfield where the weather was better. Unfortunately both planes became separated and lost contact. Not long afterwards the lost pilots made an emergency-crash-landing in a snow covered field off Rt 116 in Conway. The plane suffered considerable damage, and both men were transported to a medical facility with non-life threatening injuries.
