Charlestown, Rhode Island – October 12, 1955
On October 12, 1955, a navy S2 Tracker aircraft, (Ser. No. 133309), attached to an anti-submarine squadron, was making practice landings and take offs at the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Air Field. As the plane approached the runway for a landing it crash-landed on a sandbar in Ninigret Pond just short of the runway. Neither of the two man crew were injured. The plane was salvaged and put back in service.
