Charlestown, Rhode Island – February 21, 1956
On February 21, 1956, Lt. (jg) Daniel M. Reddy, 28, was making practice take-offs and landings at the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Airfield in a Douglas Skyraider when the aircraft caught fire in flight. The pilot made an emergency landing but discovered that the canopy was jammed shut, and used a hunting knife to free himself. He was not injured.
