Brockton, MA. – July 31, 1949

Brockton, Massachusetts – July 31, 1949

On July 31, 1949, a 45-year-old pilot took off from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in a two-seater airplane bound for Brockton.  As he was approaching the Brockton Airport the plane’s engine stalled forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in a stump-littered field.  The plane was badly damaged but the pilot wasn’t seriously hurt.

Later inspection revealed that ice had formed in the carburetor  despite the hot temperature of the day.  The mechanic told reporters that the phenomenon had nothing to do with outside weather conditions.
