Barrington, R. I. – October 31, 1948

Barrington, Rhode Island – October 31, 1948

On October 31, 1948, a 22-year-old pilot was flying over Narragansett Bay in a Fairchild PT-19 practicing for his commercial pilot license.  At one point as he was changing the gasoline flow from one tank to another the engine stopped and he couldn’t restart it.  Looking for a place to make an emergency landing, he saw an open field on the Richardson Estate on Adams Point Road in Barrington and aimed for it.  While attempting to land, the plane crashed into a grove of trees near the road at the edge of the field.  Although the plane was wrecked the pilot was not injured, and extricated himself from the wreckage before fire and police arrived.
