Atlantic Ocean – December 27, 1957
On December 27, 1957, a navy radar plane with three men aboard, was flying off the coast of Charlestown, Rhode Island, when it crashed into the sea off East Beach. (The cause is unknown.) The pilot and the two enlisted crewmen escaped the plane before it sank, however, one of the crewmen, Aviation Technician First Class John J. Young succumbed to the frigid water before he could be rescued.
