Athol, Ma. – July 13, 1930

Athol, Massachusetts – July 13, 1930

On July 13, 1930, airplane rides were being offered at the Orange-Athol Airport in what was described as a “barnstorming plane”.  At one point a man and a 12-year-old youth paid for a plane flight. The plane was seen to take off and rise to to an altitude of 100 feet when it suddenly dipped, then righted itself, and then “pancaked” to the ground smashing apart as it did so.  The two passengers were reported to be “probably fatally injured”, but the pilot suffered only minor injuries.
