Amesbury, Massachusetts – January 30, 1949
On January 30, 1949, a lone 24-year-old pilot of a single engine Cessna airplane was flying over the Amesbury area when the engine suddenly lost all power. He made an emergency landing on the ice covering Lake Attitash. When the plane came to rest he jumped clear just as the aircraft broke through the ice and sank about 100 feet from shore. The pilot was not injured.
