Allagash Wilderness, ME. – March 7, 2011

Allagash Wilderness, Maine – March 7, 2011

On March 7, 2011, a single-engine, 4-seat, Diamond DA-40 aircraft (Canadian Reg. No. C-GPDO) with two men aboard left Halifax, Nova Scotia, bound for Quebec, Canada.  As the aircraft was passing over northern Maine ice began to form on the wings.  The pilot requested a lower altitude, which was granted, but ice continued to build up.  The plane went down in a frozen bog in a wilderness portion of Somerset County, Maine, eight miles from the nearest road.  Sources give the approximate location as being “A few miles from Daaquam, Maine”,  and “south of Saint-Pamphile, Canada.

Maine state troopers and game wardens reached the crash scene the following day by using snow mobiles and snow shoes.  The seriously injured pilot was airlifted from the scene by a Canadian search and rescue helicopter and flown to Quebec for medical treatment.  The passenger perished in the accident.
