Seekonk River, Rhode Island – March 23, 1962
On March 23, 1962, a 40-year-old pilot from Massachusetts was flying a single-engine airplane from Connecticut to South Weymouth, Massachusetts, when he ran out of fuel over the Providence, R. I. area, which caused him to make an emergency landing in the Seekonk River between Providence and East Providence. The plane went into the water about 100 yards from shore and sank, but the pilot was able to extricate himself and swim to the East Providence side. The aircraft was later recovered.
