Cranston, Rhode Island – March 13, 1938
On the afternoon of March 13, 1938, a lone pilot from Brooklyn, N.Y. took off from East Boston Airport in a single-engine cabin monoplane bound for Floyd Bennett Field in New York. While passing over Rhode Island the plane developed engine trouble and the pilot began looking for a place to make an emergency landing. He saw an open field and attempted to land, but he struck an unseen boulder in the grass which caused the plane to wreck. Although the plane had extensive damage, the pilot suffered only minor injuries.
The incident happened on the farm of Bertha Levesque on Pippin Orchard Road in the western part of Cranston.
